Team Picker Wheel — Fair Random Group Generator
Drop in your player names and spin to assign teams. Removes the captain-picks-best-friend pattern from pickup games.
Team Picker
Add participant names, choose how many teams, and we'll split them fairly.
The Team Picker Wheel is the gentle fix for the schoolyard problem: when team captains pick, the last person picked notices. Instead, drop all the names in the wheel, decide how many teams you want, and use Elimination mode so each player is assigned exactly once. Everyone gets sorted in the same way — and the wheel can be replayed in front of the group, which kills the “you stacked the teams” argument before it starts.
How to use it
- Paste all player names, one per line, in List mode.
- Switch to Elimination so every player is assigned exactly once.
- Spin once per slot. Tally the picks: first half to Team A, second half to Team B (or rotate A/B/A/B for three teams).
- For repeatable team draws, share the URL — same wheel, same fairness.
Use cases
- Pickup basketball, football, or volleyball games.
- School PE classes splitting students into balanced groups.
- Game-night party splits for trivia or board games.
- Workshops dividing attendees into breakout groups.
- Hackathons forming spontaneous teams without captains.
- Family game nights when the grown-ups want to stay neutral.
Frequently asked questions
How do I assign N players into M teams?
Add all N names, switch to Elimination mode, and spin N times. Assign picks in rotation: spin 1 → Team A, spin 2 → Team B, spin 3 → Team A again (for two teams). For three teams, rotate A/B/C/A/B/C.
Can the wheel split teams automatically?
Not yet — automated split-into-N is on the roadmap. For now, the rotation method above is what works and is fully fair.
How is this fairer than picking captains?
Random assignment removes the social signal of being picked last or second-to-last. Every player has the same probability of going to any team, and the wheel is visible to everyone — no one can claim it was stacked.
Can I save my team picker for next week?
Yes — the URL contains your player list. Bookmark it; the wheel opens with the same names ready to spin.
Does it work for big groups?
Up to 200 names. The wheel’s labels shrink past 30 entries; use Cards mode to manage longer rosters and Elimination to step through them.
